Lauren Lee McCarthy is an American artist, designer, and programmer based in Los Angeles. She holds a Bachelor of Science in computer science and engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a Master of Fine Arts in design media arts from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
McCarthy's work explores the relationship between humans and technology, often using interactive installations and performances to engage participants in a critique of our increasingly digital world. She has exhibited her work at numerous venues, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA), Ars Electronica, and the Japan Media Arts Festival.
In addition to her artistic practice, McCarthy is also an assistant professor at UCLA Design Media Arts, where she teaches courses on interactive installations and critical methodologies. She has also co-created open source software and tools for artists, including p5.js, a JavaScript library for creative coding.
